About the Book
Sharh Umm al-Barahin
A commentary on Umm al-Barahin, the celebrated theological primer of Imam Muhammad ibn Yusuf al-Sanusi, which presents the foundational tenets of Islamic creed according to the Ash'ari school in a concise and systematic form. Umm al-Barahin became one of the most widely studied texts in Islamic theology, particularly across North and West Africa, generating a substantial tradition of commentaries.
Imam al-Akhdari's commentary provides explanatory and analytical notes on the text of al-Sanusi, making its theological arguments accessible to students while maintaining scholarly rigour. The work reflects the Maliki and Ash'ari scholarly tradition of the Maghreb and its importance in the transmission of Islamic theology across North Africa and the broader Muslim world.
Imam 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad al-Akhdari (920–983 AH / 1514–1575 CE) was a distinguished Maliki scholar from Algeria, renowned across the Islamic world for his contributions to logic, theology, and the Arabic sciences. He is best known as the author of al-Sullam al-Murawnaq, a versified text on logic that became one of the most widely studied introductory works in the discipline and continues to be taught in traditional institutions. He was deeply rooted in the Ash'ari theological tradition of the Maghreb.
