About the Book
Falsafat Ibn Rushd
Fasl al-Maqal and Al-Kashf ‘an Manahij al-Adillah are two of the most important theological and philosophical epistles of the celebrated Andalusian scholar and judge, Ibn Rushd. In these works, Ibn Rushd explores the relationship between revelation and reason, arguing that sound intellectual inquiry and authentic religious teachings cannot ultimately contradict one another. Fasl al-Maqal (The Decisive Treatise) examines the legitimacy of philosophical reasoning within Islam and sets out principles for reconciling apparent conflicts between scripture and rational demonstration.
Al-Kashf ‘an Manahij al-Adillah (The Exposition of the Methods of Proof) presents Ibn Rushd’s systematic treatment of Islamic creed, discussing questions related to the existence and attributes of Allah, prophethood, divine decree, and the afterlife. Written with clarity and intellectual rigour, these two epistles provide a valuable insight into the theological thought of one of Islam’s most influential philosophers and remain essential texts for the study of Islamic theology, philosophy, and the interaction between reason and revelation.
Imam Abu al-Walid Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Rushd al-Andalusi al-Maliki (520–595 AH / 1126–1198 CE), known in the Western tradition as Averroes, was one of the most eminent philosophers, jurists, and physicians of the medieval period. Born in Cordoba, Andalusia, into a distinguished family of Maliki jurists, he was a prolific author whose extensive commentaries on Aristotle had a profound influence on both the Islamic and Western philosophical traditions. He served as court physician and wrote authoritatively in medicine, astronomy, philosophy, and Maliki jurisprudence.
