About the Book
Al-Arwah
A work by Imam Tantawi Jawhari engaging with the question of souls (al-arwah), exploring this subject from the perspectives of Islamic theology, the natural sciences, and the spiritual tradition. The work reflects the author's characteristic approach of bringing the religious and natural sciences into dialogue in a comprehensive and accessible treatment of a profound theological and philosophical subject.
Tantawi Jawhari was one of the most distinctive and prolific voices in Egyptian Islamic scholarship at the turn of the twentieth century, celebrated for his encyclopaedic engagement with the relationship between Islam and the natural sciences. This work reflects that same spirit of synthetic scholarship, situating the theological question of souls within a broad framework that draws on both the Islamic tradition and the natural sciences of his era.
Imam Tantawi Jawhari (1287–1358 AH / 1870–1940 CE) was one of the most distinctive Egyptian scholars of the modern era, celebrated for his encyclopaedic Quranic commentary Al-Jawahir fi Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim, which engaged extensively with the relationship between revelation and the natural sciences. He taught at Egyptian educational institutions and produced a prolific body of work engaging with theology, natural philosophy, and Islamic thought in a manner accessible to a broad readership.
